A Brooklyn judge has sentenced the driver who killed a newlywed Williamsburg couple in 2013 to 25 years to life in prison, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced.

"Today's sentence shows our determination to get justice for Nathan and Raizy Glauber, and their son, Tanchem, whom the defendant killed by driving recklessly and then just walked away," Thompson said in a statement. "Hopefully, it will help in some way to bring solace to their families."

A jury convicted Julio Acevedo, 46, of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide back in February. In March of 2013, Acevedo drove his car, at 70 miles per hour into the livery cab the 21-year-old couple was taking to a nearby hospital. Both died. Raizy was seven months pregnant and doctors delivered her baby, but he only survived for a day.

Acevedo went on the lam and fled to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, not surrendering to police for several days. In a jailhouse interview, he said that he "played a part" in the crash but that "accidents happen."

The charges would have carried less time had Acevedo not had prior convictions, including for the murder of Kelvin "50 Cent" Martin, the stickup artist whose name rapper Curtis Jackson took for his own. Acevedo had been charged with driving while intoxicated just two weeks before the fatal crash. In his defense, he claimed that he was fleeing someone who shot at him.

The sentence stands in stark contrast to the truck driver who fatally struck cyclist Mathieu Lefevre in East Williamsburg and fled the scene in 2011. The driver, Leonardo Degianni, avoided criminal charges, but last month had his license suspended for half a year.
