We've got a somewhat uncommon weather pattern taking shape today. A low pressure system is passing to the southeast of the city today at the same time a backdoor cold front is letting a cold, dry air mass slip down from northern New England. The coastal storm, with its easterly wind, is pushing cold, (water temperature off Montauk was 38.3 degrees this morning), wet North Atlantic air up against the cold, dry New England air mass. The result of the clash is a bit of a stalemate. The dry air will stay near the ground, greatly reducing our chances of rain while at the same time producing a heavy cloud cover as the wet air rides up over its drier rival. With the two cold air masses will keep the temperature to the lower 40s this afternoon.

A third player, this time a shortwave bump in the jet stream, comes into the picture tomorrow as it moves out of the Plains states toward the Great Lakes. In doing so that shortwave will begin to push the front, which has wobbled back and forth across the city a couple of times already, back northward as a warm front. As the warm front moves northward a widespread area of light rain will develop overnight and become more showery during the day on Thursday. With continued gusty easterly winds tomorrow's high will only reach the mid 40s but it will feel like it's in the mid 30s.

Much warmer weather, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms, arrives on Friday as the warm front moves through the area for good. Look for a high in the upper 60s. Dry air arrives in time for the weekend as Saturday and Sunday both look like they will be sunny with highs in the lower to mid 60s.
