[UPDATE BELOW] Now that the 7 train has made its triumphant return to nearly regular service, the L train is ready to start playing games with your weekend subway travel. Do you live in North Brooklyn? Do you like North Brooklyn? You better like it, because you're stuck there until mid-May. They fixed up that McCarren Park hipster swamp just in time.
Yes, starting on Friday, there will be no service between 8th and Bedford Avenues, with that change in place until May 18th. May 18th, as you may already know, is SIX WEEKS AWAY. So many things will happen between now and May 18th. Trees will have leaves by May 18th. Eight dive bars will shutter by May 18th. Don Draper will have slept with 187 more women by May 18th. My new apartment will have bookshelves by May—no, who am I kidding, that'll never happen.
Of course, while the weekend shutdown is annoying, it's also quite necessary, as evidenced by all the angry tweets about broken rails and hour-long delays. Plus, the J train ride into Manhattan is so pretty! Less so when you're trapped inside the armpits of disgruntled former L train riders, but still.
In addition to the weekend service suspension, there's no service between 8th and Bedford Avenues from midnight to 5 a.m. on weeknights. That disruption's been in place since the end of March, and will stretch on until May 22nd.
At least we get Smorgasburg all to ourselves.
Update 1:33 p.m.: Good news! It appears that the L train shutdown has been postponed until next weekend, so make sure you ride over the East River at least fifteen times on Saturday to make up for lost time.
