Jon Stewart returned to his Daily Show chair for the first time after his successor, Trevor Noah, was excoriated for a series of tasteless tweets he posted prior to being named host of the popular show. Stew-Beef kicked off last night's broadcast by addressing the storm of outrage that Noah's old tweets sparked. Calling the whole thing a "kerfuffle," Stewart begged viewers to give the guy a chance:
"I know there was a large kerfuffle on Twitter," Stewart acknowledged at the top of the show. "But I can say this, I think, without hesitation, Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect... or not. Just as I earned your trust and respect... or did not... I do hope you give him an opportunity to earn that trust and respect, because my experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual, and, man, I think, you give him that time, and it’s gonna be well worth it."
Comedy Central has stood by Noah in the wake of the kerfuffle. In response to the uproar, Noah tweeted, "to reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian."
