Tonight the Taxi and Limousine Commission, in conjunction with Families for Safe Streets, will debut "Drive Like Your Family Lives Here," a fifteen minute film featuring five families sharing their stories of loss caused by traffic fatalities.
The film will be implemented in taxi driver training programs immediately, and for-hire training later this year. The MTA and the NYC Department of Administrative Services will also be folding the video into their fleet driver training, although we do not yet have specific dates.
Throughout the short film, grieving family members speak candidly about a loved one lost, sitting with heavily symbolic empty chairs. In the case of the Liao family, mother Amy, father Hsi-Pei, and brother Preston Liao sit with a high-chair: Allison Liao was only three years old on October 6, 2013, when she was hit and killed by a car making a left turn while she crossed the street in the crosswalk, with the walk signal.
TLC representative Allan Fromberg says, "It [the film] is difficult to watch and hear, though some parts are more graphically rending than others. But the goal is for drivers to have the video really resonate with them."
TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi will introduce the film tonight at 6 p.m. at the Crosby Street Hotel, and there will be remarks by NYPD Transportation Chief Thomas Chan, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, and Transportation Committee Chair and Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez. (There will be a brief Q&A session if there's enough time.)
