A group of inmates at Rikers Island reportedly came to a female prison guard's rescue when a fellow prisoner sexually assaulted her. The inmate has since been arrested.
The Daily News reports that 27-year-old Raleek Young was able to sneak into a watch post vestibule inside the Anna M. Kross Center on Saturday night. The vestibule was occupied by a female correction officer and Young allegedly trapped her inside while he choked her and masturbated.
According to reports, a number of inmates helped correction officers break through the Plexiglas surrounding the watch post in order to pull Young off the victim. "I appreciate (them) helping a sister officer because that could have been their mother, wife or sister,” Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Norman told the paper, adding that the majority of inmates “are there to do their time and go home.”
Though the Daily News reports that Young, who was convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2007, was not immediately arrested, a spokesperson with the DOC tells us, "Late Saturday evening at the Anna M. Kross Center, a Correction Officer was assaulted by an inmate. The inmate was arrested. The matter is under investigation."
Young now faces charges of attempted rape, sexual abuse, forcible touching, and assault and harassment.
