Two months ago a school bus driver struck 85-year-old Jeanine Deutsch in Forest Hills. This week, Deutsch died from her injuries, and the driver of the bus has been arrested and charged with failure to yield.
According to an NYPD release, shortly before 1 p.m. on December 19, Deutsch was attempting to walk north across 108th Street, directly in front of her apartment building, when Isaac Sanson, traveling south down 108th, turned right onto 70th Road and hit Deutsch.
Sanson, 47, is charged under the Right of Way Law passed by the City Council in August. The misdemeanor carries maximum penalties of $500 in fines and 30 days in jail.
An NYPD spokesman, Detective James Duffy, could not explain why the Collision Investigation Squad waited two months to arrest Sanson; the misdemeanor charge in the Right of Way Law applies to injuries as well as fatalities. We've asked the NYPD for more context and will update if they respond.
By our count, Sanson is the 14th driver to be charged under the law. According to Transportation Alternatives, police reported more than 10,000 moving violations for failure to yield in the four months after the law was passed; in those four months, 12 drivers were charged.
Most recently, 58-year-old MTA bus driver Francisco DeJesus was arrested after striking a 15-year-old girl in a Williamsburg crosswalk earlier this month.
