The driver who killed a Williamsburg couple and their unborn child two years ago has been convicted of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, and could be sentenced to life in prison.
On Thursday, a jury convicted 45-year-old Julio Acevedo of killing Raizy and Nachman Glauber, both 21, in March 2013, after he slammed his car into the livery cab they were taking to a nearby hospital. Both were killed; Raizy was seven months pregnant, and though the infant was delivered by cesarean section, he did not survive.
Prosecutors noted that Acevedo, who has a lengthy rap sheet, was driving about 70 miles per hour when he struck the Glaubers, which was about twice the speed limit. Witnesses said he never slowed or swerved before hitting their car, and after striking them, he walked over to the car, peered inside, and left the area. He has also been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Acevedo turned himself over to cops in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania several days after killing the couple. In subsequent interviews, he told reporters he "played a part" in the crash, but that "[a]ccidents happen."
He will be sentenced on March 18th, and faces up to life in prison.
