Gamblers—not the grandmother mentioned in the story—at the 2012 opening day of the Resorts World Casino (Nicole Woszczyna/Gothamist)
On Saturday, a 56-year-old Brooklyn woman was arrested after she apparently left her five-year-old granddaughter in the car while she went into the Resorts World Casino to gamble. According to WCBS 2, Renee Osby reportedly told cops that she just "went into the casino to 'cash a check.'"
However, the Daily News reports that Osby "first tried to bring her granddaughter with her into the Resorts World Casino in South Ozone Park but was blocked because kids aren't allowed inside, according to police sources. The security guards later spotted Osby inside and became suspicious. So they went looking for the tyke and found her trapped inside the unheated vehicle at about 11 a.m. and called the cops."
The casino issued this statement: "Earlier today, Resorts World security observed a 5-year-old child in an unattended vehicle in the parking lot. They were able to safely remove the child from the vehicle and immediately called 911. The safety and security of everyone on Resorts World property is our number one priority." It's believed the child was in the car for an hour.
Osby, a home health aide, pleaded not guilty to the charge of acting in a manner injurious to a child and was released without bail. However, she cannot see her granddaughter. Her lawyer said, "My client is an active woman in her community who has never been convicted of a crime."
