Flights have been cancelled for weather far less severe than the frosty maelstrom poised to rock the city tonight. Your flight is not special. You are not special. That shit is getting cancelled, and the sooner you rebook it for later this week, the sooner you can focus on other things, like perfecting your Fireball martini recipe or carving an ice luge from the snow drifts on your fire escape.
So far (this figure will have increased by the time you finish this sentence) 3,550 flights have been cancelled for Monday, and 4,360 have been cancelled between Monday and Tuesday. You can check the status of your own doomed flight on FlightAware, even though we both know the outcome.
But all is not lost! Several major airlines will let you rebook your flight now, with no additional fees, even if yours hasn't officially been axed. Do it now, before the riff raff sucks up all the good seats later in the week.
Regarding your commute: The subway is functioning normally, though it would be prudent to keep an eye out for service changes later in the day. MTA buses will continue to operate on schedule, having been outfitted with chains or snow tires.
LIRR and Metro-North service could be reduced or cancelled as the blizzard picks up speed later this afternoon, though LIRR waiting rooms will be open 24-hours through Friday just in case. Alternate side parking has been suspended for Monday and Tuesday.
The city also deployed around 500 salt spreaders, and 2,100 snowplows will hit the streets after the first two inches of snow accumulates. An additional 4,200 plows will be at the ready.
The storm is expected to start gathering steam after 6 p.m., and at its worst will produce winds of 35 mph or more and reduce visibility to just a quarter of a mile. Stay inside if you can. Good luck. Sorry about your flight. :(
