You gotta have a gimmick to break through the noise in this town—put Nutella on it or GTFO. Lower East Side izakaya Azasu has already been having fun with their food—see Cheeseburger Spring Rolls and sweet pancake "Choco Yaki"—and now they're offering a chance for diners to go hands-on with their new DIY Sushi Boxes. So easy even a drugstore can do it!
Diners are expected to create their own hand rolls—conical, hand-held versions of maki—by adding ingredients of their choosing. Each bento-style box comes with "both tuna and salmon...plus all the nori, rice, and add-ons like daikon pickled in turmeric, shaved tamago, avocado, sprouts, and an assortment of crunchy, julienned vegetables." The "experience" costs $20.
The restaurant doesn't actually serve sushi on its regular menu, which may help explain why they're asking diners to do the heavy lifting. But if Jiro Dreams Of Sushi has taught us anything, it's that the art—yes, art—of making sushi takes discipline, skill and years of training. Unless they'll have roving masters to help form perfect cones, expect a lot of cursing.
