One of the more alienating things about being a Jewish kid in December was the avalanche of holiday television specials. You couldn't tell your gentile friends that Kris Kringle wasn't real (but DAMN it feels good to say it now!), all your favorite TV characters got into a Christmas spirit that passed over your house, and Mickey Rooney made for a truly terrifying evil St. Nick on Full House.
But the '90s blessed Millennial Tribe Members with a holiday season savior in the form of "A Rugrats Chanukah", a beautiful half-hour special in which Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil and Angelica take on The Meany of Chanukah and learn a little something about that sad little festival American Jews have tried to substitute for Christmas and never learned how to spell. After all, as Tommy so succinctly put it, "Every night I have to wear a funny hat while Grandpa Boris says some stuff I don't understand and Mommy lights another candle. But then I get a present." Right on, brother.
You can relive the Pickles family's holiday magic at Videology on Friday, where television website TV Hangover will screen a night's worth of Nickelodeon holiday specials. The aptly-named A Very Nickelodeon Christmas Party includes the aforementioned Rugrats special, along with "A Rugrats Kwanzaa" (you go, Susie Carmichael!), and a few other favorites that'll be chosen by the audience. Be warned: they'll be screening the Hey Arnold! Christmas special, in which Arnold gives Mr. Hyunh the best Secret Santa gift of all time. You'll need tissues no matter how much you think your adult heart has hardened.
Expect drinking games—shots when a Rugrat mispronounces a word, y'all!—Nickelodeon trivia and an Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. Vote for Ren & Stimpy's "A Scooter For Yaksmas," and remember what life was like before the holiday season meant reading hot takes on the merits of Love Actually. And remember: A Maccababy's gotta do what a Maccababy's gotta do.
A Very Nickelodeon Christmas Party kicks off at 9:30 p.m. at Videology, 308 Bedford Avenue at South 1st Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-782-3468, videology.info). Tickets are $5, and you can purchase them online.
