When Eric Garner was killed by an NYPD officer on Staten Island this past summer, he left behind a wife of 27 years, five children, and two grandchildren. Garner's youngest daughter, Emerald Snipes, has set up a crowdfunding page so you can support the family. "I just want to make sure that my brothers and sisters are taken care of," Snipes says. "I want to make sure my 20-year-old brother is focused on finishing college, and my 15-year-old brother is focused on finishing high school, because that's what my Dad really really wanted, was for everyone to finish school."
Snipes, 22, has a 3-year-old daughter named Kaylee. "I'm trying to get her into school, so I can get into therapy and start working." She says that the money donated "is going to each child. And to help out my mom, to help out my grandmother."
"My dad was the person that I called when I didn't have any more, so it's funny that a lot of people want to help us now, because my Dad would do it," Snipes added.
Since the fund was started on Sunday it has raised a little more than $11,000; the goal is to raise $25,000.
Snipes said that her 20-year-old brother Eric Jr., plays basketball for Essex County College, and was astounded when LeBron James and other basketball players warmed up before the Nets game last night wearing t-shirts emblazoned with her's father's words.
"It made me want to cry, because the support is tremendous. The fact that people want to help us, genuinely, really help us, without wanting anything in return is awesome, and overwhelming sometimes."
