68 people have been sickened by a nationwide salmonella outbreak stemming from bean sprouts sourced from a Brooklyn company. So if you were planning to swap out turkey for takeout lo mein tonight...maybe reconsider that.
Investigators have traced the outbreak, which has affected people in New York and nine other states, to Wonton Foods Inc, a prepared Asian foods manufacturer in East Williamsburg. At least five people from the Empire State have gotten sick, along with individuals in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The company has reportedly agreed to to stop shipping the product for now, as per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's recommendation.
According to the FDA, the outbreak dates all the way back to September. And officials say bean sprouts are common culprits when it comes to bacteria outbreaks, with 30 food-borne outbreaks linked to them since 1996. In addition to salmonella, sprouts have also been linked to listeria and E. Coli outbreaks.
