The late screen goddess and native New Yorker Lauren Bacall owned a nine-room apartment in The Dakota, where she lived since purchasing it in 1961. The actress paid somewhere around $48,000 at the time, and even though it was just appraised for $9 million, it has hit the market at $26 million. While you'll get sweeping views of Central Park at that price, you'll only be able to enjoy them from the apartment's Juliet Balcony (womp womp). To the listing:
"Retained by the original owner since the 1960's, this rare and iconic treasure represents a true once in a life-time opportunity.
One enters the residence through a private mahogany vestibule with towering doors into an elegant and exceptionally large 18 foot entry Foyer, with its own highly coveted original fireplace, unique to the Dakota only. To the right is a seemingly endless 70 foot gallery connecting the major public rooms including the Library, Great Room, and Formal Dining Room. The warm, inviting Library includes original pocket doors, fireplace, and overlooks Central Park from a floor to ceiling window with a Juliet balcony, offering a small treasure from which to enjoy the exceptional park views. The 29 foot wide Great Room offers a sprawling entertaining space with two enormous park facing windows, mantled fireplace, mahogany doors connecting the Library, and another set of mahogany double doors leading to the Gallery."
It goes on and on, with mentions of a butler's pantry, a formal dining room, more fireplaces, a master suite, a bay window, and a west wing with a home office, laundry room, and eat-in kitchen overlooking the building's courtyard. The monthly maintenance fee is nearly $12,000, but your kids probably don't really want to go to college anyway.
