A Manhattan Assistant District Attorney was charged with assault last night after allegedly choking a woman at a Kips Bay bar earlier this month.
According to reports, on November 1st at around 2 a.m., 35-year-old Eli Cherkasky was at Failte Bar on 2nd Avenue near 30th Street. There, he allegedly told a 31-year-old woman, "Bitch. You’re a bitch. Hit me. Why don’t you hit me," before calling her a "c--t," throwing her to the ground and choking her.
A criminal complaint says the victim, who was treated at a nearby hospital, "experienced substantial pain and a limited range of motion to her neck," has "difficulty swallowing” and suffered “bruising and swelling to her face and body.” The Post says the altercation started when Cherkasky picked up the woman's belongings at the bar, though it's unclear how they knew each other.
Cherkasky, who has worked for the Manhattan DA's office since 2006, was arraigned last night and charged with misdemeanor assault, obstruction of breathing and menacing. He was released on his own recognizance, and is reportedly on leave from his office.
