Inside the Croissant Donut. (Jen Carlson/Gothamist)

In July 2013, we asked Dunkin' Donuts if they'd jump on the Cronut craze and create their own hybrid, but we were told, "While we have been a leader in both donuts and croissants for years, we do not have plans to introduce this particular product in the U.S. at this time." Well, things have changed—this week the chain has unveiled their Croissant Donut.

Their press release made it sound a little bit like they invented this thing: "Dunkin’ Donuts is bringing together two bakery favorites into one tasty treat... the Croissant Donut at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide beginning on Monday, November 3rd. Dunkin’ Donuts’ Croissant Donut features a delicate and flaky croissant ring that is glazed like a donut. We look forward to bringing this new, unique bakery item to our guests nationwide." When I was younger, the local grocery store Ancona's in Connecticut sold glazed croissants, so this is nothing new, just as the Cronut™ was nothing new... but who cares about that, how does it hold up? We tried them out this morning and the Gothamist staff was overwhelmingly pleased.

You get the point: they're good, in the same way their glazed donuts are good. And they're half the price of the Real Thing, at about $2.50 a pop—for that, you won't get fillings a la Ansel, but you will get "24 layers of buttery dough covered with the same sweet distinctive glaze used on our Glazed Donuts, creating the ultimate pastry that is crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside." It also comes in its own "gift box"... not quite the Dominique Ansel golden folding box, but it'll do.
