A woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver while trying to help her dog, who had been struck by a separate driver. The 31-year-old victim, whose name hasn't been released, was walking with a friend and her dogs at W. 2nd Street and Avenue Z in Gravesend around 10:20 p.m. on Friday when the incident happened.
Witnesses tell the News that a driver struck her miniature Doberman pinscher. "We were walking her two dogs down Avenue Z when this car came and hit the little miniature pinscher," said Brian Linder, 61, a close friend of the victim. "She ran out of the sidewalk to kneel by the dog. Then the other car coming down Avenue Z came and hit her."
The driver, who was in a black Jeep Wrangler, fled the scene. Linder put his jacket under her head to slow the bleeding: "She said she was having difficulty breathing and I could see a pool of blood under her head." She was taken to Lutheran Medical Center in critical condition.
Pasquolino, the mini-pinscher, died at the scene; the other dog, a pitbull Gino, was not injured. No arrests have been made and the investigation in ongoing.
NYC passed an ignominious milestone on Friday: an unidentified man was fatally struck by an MTA bus in the South Bronx, becoming at least the 100th pedestrian killed in NYC traffic this year according to Right Of Way.
