A Brooklyn postal carrier was arrested this week after officials discovered he had failed to deliver 40,000 pieces of mail, having hoarded stolen correspondence dating all the way back to 2005.

According to a criminal complaint, Joseph Brucato, 67, was discovered with the 2,500 pounds of mail earlier this month, after his supervisor found some of the mail stashed in his personal vehicle. Further investigation allegedly yielded 2,500 pounds of undelivered mail found in Brucato's home and locker, in addition to his car.

Brucato, who had a route in Flatbush, claims that he suffers from depression and allegedly admitted to hoarding the mail. He was arrested on Wednesday, and a court magistrate ordered him to "abstain from excessive alcohol consumption," releasing him on his own recognizance.

The U.S. Postal Service has suspended him without pay, though to be fair, sources tell us that nobody from the post office has ever cracked the 50 percent barrier.
