The Roots are like NYC's personal wedding band, they never turn down a gig. And lucky for us: they're very, very talented. So it's good news then that they'll be kicking off First Mondays at the Rainbow Room when it reopens on October 6th.
According to the press release, "First Mondays will feature an intimate concert with top name entertainment from rock to opera the first Monday of each month. The following Mondays will be reserved for dinner and dancing on the revolving dance floor which overlooks New York City." The Room, which we'll have more on in the coming week, will also serve a Sunday brunch, and include a cocktail terrace—"The former Pavilion has been renamed SixtyFive and will be a cocktail lounge with an outdoor terrace, open to the public Monday to Friday evenings."
The historic landmark—and real life Mad Men hang—opened on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza in 1934 (closing in 2009), and was the first restaurant housed inside of a high-rise. Prior to its 1930s opening, the NY Times wrote about the "nightclub to open atop RCA Building," noting "The dining room two stories high, will be known as the ‘Stratosphere’ and will open with an extensive array of entertainment.” Hopefully the old magic can be recaptured.
Tickets for opening night can be purchased by calling 212-632-5000 or visiting rainbowroom.com.
