The adorable muppets that taught you how to read have headed from 123 Sesame Street to Lincoln Center this week, as part of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts's new exhibition, Somebody Come and Play: 45 Years of Sesame Street Helping Kids Grow Smarter, Stronger, and Kinder. Such a long subway ride for all the baby monsters!
The free exhibition, which kicked off yesterday and runs through the end of January, will show off nearly 250 items from the Sesame Street collection, including 20 muppets. All your childhood friends are there—Elmo, Oscar, Bert, Ernie, Snuffy, Super Grover, The Count—along with replicas of Sesame Street's iconic green lamppost, the classic brownstone stoop that's ripe for feelings-sharing, Ernie's rubber ducky, Alistair Cookie's "Monsterpiece Theater" robe, video clips, original animation cells, photographs, scripts and more.
The NYPL will also be hosting workshops, storytelling sessions and films for kids AND adults; you can find the full schedule on their website. None of this makes up for the fact that you didn't get to discuss the letter "R" with Grover as a child, of course, but at least it's a start.
