Some great news for beleaguered straphangers who rely on the R train: after 13 months of renovations and headaches, MTA sources say the R train will resume service between Brooklyn & Manhattan starting this Monday! This calls for some celebratory calisthenics.
The R train's East River tunnel, Montague Tube, has been closed down since last summer for some much-needed Sandy repairs. In October 2012, Sandy's surges flooded the Montague Tube, a mile-long pair of tunnels that connects Brooklyn Heights with Lower Manhattan; the "massive inflow of corrosive salt water" left tracks, signals and electrical components submerged for days.
Since then, the R train has been (mostly) running in two sections, from Forest Hills-71st Street in Queens to Whitehall Street in Manhattan, and from Court Street to Bay Ridge-95th Street in Brooklyn (and it caused a lot of griping on the C train). The work was scheduled to be done in October, but Brooklyn Paper reports that they are weeks ahead of schedule. Sources tell both the Post and News that regular R train service is expected to being Monday morning. (The MTA did not respond to our request for confirmation.)
So all is well on the R line. Unless of course, it's not.
