A young Jewish couple was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals on the Upper East Side last night, and the NYPD is investigating the assault as a hate crime.

According to police, a 27-year-old Jewish man and his wife were walking on East 63 Street near 2nd Ave at around 8 p.m. last night. The NYPD says the couple was then approached by two vehicles carrying several individuals, a number of whom directed anti-Jewish statements toward the couple.

An argument ensued, according to cops, and one individual allegedly threw a water bottle at the wife. Another allegedly struck the husband, causing him to suffer a laceration to the ear. Cops say the suspects fled and the couple refused medical attention; the Hate Crime Task Force is currently investigating the assault.

“Last night’s apparent bias attack on the Upper East Side has no place in this area or anywhere in New York City,” Council Member Dan Garodnick, who represents the district, told JP Updates. “I expect the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force and the 19th Precinct to conduct a thorough inquiry to bring the perpetrators of this assault to justice quickly. This kind of hate-fueled violence in New York City cannot stand.”

The website reports that the suspects were driving a 2005 Cadillac Escalade with NY State plates and a Nissan Altima with Florida plates.
