Does New York City sleep? We sent a photographer out to capture Times Square during that somewhat surreal transitional hour of 5 a.m., that magic window between when the bars close and the coffee starts brewing in earnest. When it's not dark but it's not light. When people are finally going to sleep or just about to wake up. The emptiest hour for NYC streets, one could argue.
Click through for a look at the normally bustling area between 5 and 6 a.m. this past Sunday. Photographer Gretchen Robinette tells us there were few people out—some revelers white knuckling on to Saturday night, a few tourists taking selfies, and the occasional aimless wanderer. Overall, however, the scene was "very eerie, being so bright with lights, covered in trash, but mostly abandoned."
