It's time once more for Summer Streets—three consecutive Saturdays in August during which cars are temporarily banned in part of Manhattan, leaving Park Avenue and Lafayette Street from East 72nd down to Chambers Street to pedestrians and cyclists alone.
And the activities! Creative use of the Park Avenue Tunnel is a Summer Streets staple, and this year is no different:
Norwegian artist Jana Winderen will create a 7-block long immersive sound installation within the Park Avenue Tunnel using sounds recorded from shallow to deep underwater environments in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Canada, USA, Thailand, and most recently around the equator in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Ms. Winderen records sounds made by crustaceans, fish and mammals using sensitive hydrophones.
Here's a taste:
What else we got? Dog park! Psychiatric Mini Golf ("each hole presents a different emotional obstacle such as, worry or jealousy. Hidden within the cheery colors and plastic grass, visitors test their ability to handle precarious obstacles like, a seesaw platform or a par-40 maze that literally spells "Frustration.") Ninety-one trumpet players! Yoga! Bike rentals! Music! Air! OK that's it.
Summer Streets will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 2, 9 and 16. All the information you could ever want is available here. Enjoy it now—before you know it, those streets will be covered in ice and dirt snow.
