The streets of New York City are a gritty labyrinth of filth and degradation, with brutal chaos lurking around every corner. Down here, life—if you can even call it that—is always a half step away from total anarchy, which is why we need laws to keep the riff-raff from drinking beer on their stoops or biking through stop signs at empty intersections.
Implementing all these innumerable laws is a tireless task, which is why we let our exhausted lawmakers and police officers enjoy a privileged existence in a lofty realm high above them. This is where we find one Officer Pena, pedaling his bicycle on a SoHo sidewalk like it's a sunny afternoon on the Los Gatos Creek Trail and he's on his way to Campbell to buy a bag of taffy at Rocket Fizz.
Photographer JB Nicholas says Pena biked along the Mott Street sidewalk for three full blocks, then "went into a boutique, said hi to some chick and got back on his bike and rode off down the sidewalk." There are unconfirmed reports that the woman from the boutique was later seen riding on his handlebars as Mott Street echoed with the sounds of Burt Bacharach's "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head."
The NYPD press office did not respond to our request for comment about the violation, presumably because they have more important shit to do than deal with a seemingly harmless quality of life infraction... an excuse you should try yourself the next time a cop is giving you a ticket for riding your bike wrong.
