Now that Williamsburg is so over, its famous brewery is expanding to the next NYC hotspot: Staten Island. Brooklyn Brewery has been checking out some real estate on the western shore of the borough, according to Crains, with plans to open up a new production facility to aid their growing markets overseas. The brewery hopes to build a 200,000 square-foot facility that would open by the end of 2017.
Stipulations for the site include direct rail access and close proximity to the New York and New Jersey port systems on a 20 to 25 acre stretch of land. The draft report indicated Staten Island as a possibility but also leaves open other sites in the mid-Hudson as possible locations for the $70 million expansion.
The company dramatically expanded its Brooklyn facility in 2011 amidst criticism that much of its product was brewed upstate. Brooklyn Brewery President Steve Hindy addressed the controversy with the Times, quipping "Once you name your company Brooklyn Brewery, you kind of take away the threat of moving to New Jersey." We'll know by the end of this year whether he still stands by those sentiments.
All signs point to a production-only facility without the tasting room and cranky kitties (RIP), though with all the new development in the area who's to say they won't get in on the action? Earlier this year, Staten Island's newest brewery Flagship Brewing Company opened in the St. George neighborhood with plans for another brewery also in the works. Staten Island: So Hot Right Now. Told you so.
