There's yet another newcomer on the sandwich beat in Brooklyn, this time bringing some Asian flair to ingredients encased in bread. Brothers Gibson and Johnson Ho have opened up Red Star, serving sammies, tots, bacon-on-a-stick and other goodies to the folks in Boerum Hill. Named for their family's Bowery restaurant equipment store of the same name, Red Star offers a small menu of sandwiches created by Gibson, who spent time at lauded eateries Ippudo and Momofuku Noodle Bar, as well as a turn at Landhaus, which explains that bacon stick.
The BLT ($9.50) gets a touch of miso marinated into the meat and the Korean Fried Chicken ($8.50) comes with Korean gochujang sauce, pickled daikon and dill with lettuce and tomato. Vegetarians and vegans can get down with the Beer-battered Eggplant & Tofu sandwich ($8), slathered with a shiitake-tofu marmalade and homemade vegan mayo. Any of the sandwiches can also be made as salads if you shy away from the gluten.
On the side, nosh on homemade P'tater Tots ($3.50), Shrimp Chips ($2.25) or Miss Vickie's Kettle Chips ($$2); cholesterol-concerned folks can opt for the Green Cabbage Apple Slaw ($3) or Seasonal Mixed Fruits ($2.75). They're also offering some refreshing drinks that include an Iced Ginger Green Tea ($2.50), Strawberry Lemonade ($3) or a Vita Juice Box ($1.30) in mango, guava or chrysanthemum tea.
