The woman who was struck by a hit and run driver in Midtown in May as she was waiting for the bus has died of her injuries. Charity Hicks, an activist from Detroit who was in town to speak at a conference, had been in a coma since the incident. An NYPD spokesman said this morning that police have still not located the driver who fatally injured her.
The spokesman added that while the investigation is ongoing, there have been no updates to the case since the incident occurred on May 31, when a driver careened onto the sidewalk at West 34th Street and 10th Avenue, striking a fire hydrant and bus stop pole. The pole fell onto Hicks. The driver, described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, fled the scene on foot. Another pedestrian at the scene sustained minor injuries.
Hicks, the policy director for the East Michigan Environmental Action Council, was due to speak on a panel at the Left Forum, according to a release from one of her colleagues. "Charity never shrank from calling out racism, and sharing a vision of justice and opportunity for all," the release states. "She was in demand, perhaps too much so, and rarely turned down an invitation to speak, to create connections and grow the movement, often traveling long distances by bus and train, never complaining of the time and discomfort involved."
Hicks is survived by her husband Louis. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to pay for the costs of her funeral.
