Michael Bloomberg's beloved soda ban got smacked with a gravedigger's shovel this week when an appeals judge ruled that the proposed legislation to cap sugared sodas at 16 ounces overstepped the NYC Board of Health's "regulatory authority." But it seems Mayor de Blasio's still down to stop New Yorkers from killing themselves with gallons of Coca Cola—he says he'll urge City Council to push the soda ban through.
De Blasio offered support for Bloomberg's ban during his mayoral campaign, and after the court ruling this week, noted in a statement that he was "extremely disappointed" with the decision. Now, he says he's going to task City Council with passing legislation that would similarly cap sugared drinks at 16 ounces.
"I’m going to talk to them about it, I think it’s quite clear that they are not embracing the notion...so if we can find a way forward together, that’s still the ideal,” he told the Post on Friday. It's certainly true that City Council doesn't seem so stoked about that kind of legislation: "I’ve been an opponent of what had been proposed by the Bloomberg administration,” Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito told reporters this week. “I have been disappointed that de Blasio wanted to continue that route."
Sounds like Ol' Blackbeard Bill's going to be making a few appearances at birthday parties for the children of Council Members, aye?
