The arrival of warm weather heralds the beginning of crime season, and this Memorial Day was particularly bloody. To wit, eight people were shot—two fatally—and three were stabbed across the city.
The first incident took place around 3 a.m. Monday at the Prospect Park Q station, when one person was stabbed during an attempted robbery. In an unrelated spate of violence across town, two men were stabbed just before 4 a.m. on the southbound 4 train at East 116th Street station.
The first fatal shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. in an apartment on 49th Street in Brooklyn. The 20-year-old victim was shot in the neck, and was pronounced dead by authorities upon arrival. In East New York around 3:15 a.m., another victim was shot in the head by a man who suspected him of trying to steal his car.
Two women and one man were shot on East 96th Street and Avenue M in Canarsie around 10 p.m., apparently part of a larger group of partiers who had taken their reveling to the street. The three victims were taken to Brookdale Hospital and are expected to survive.
Three other unrelated shootings at West 126th Street, West 204th Street and Amsterdam Avenue resulted in injuries but no deaths.
