Nutella celebrated its 50th anniversary today by giving away free Nutella Cronut Holes outside its "Nutella Bar" location in Eataly. Cronut creator Dominique Ansel was on hand to help distribute the coveted holes on a first come, first serve basis. Here's a look at what you missed:

Roughly 20 minutes before the event was due to start, the line began to form alongside the small plaza facing Madison Square Park. Despite the lengthy wait for the free Cronut Holes, it was a pretty relaxed scene, perhaps because people weren't waiting to cram themselves into the closet-sized SoHo storefront where Ansel sells his beloved Cronut.

One of the early birds lucky enough to be at the very front of the line was Wisconsin native Ike Yen. Yen, a student visiting a friend in town, decided to come to the pop-up because "I had nothing to do this morning." Yen was not only unaware of the Cronut and its cultural significance, but he's not a big fan of pastries in the first place. As he put it: "I'm not a fan of sweets or deep fried stuff, but there's always a first time. I'll take a chance."

That's not to say that there weren't any true Cronut enthusiasts on hand. One woman from Washington Heights who would only identify herself as "J.T." said she had intended to join the line "extra" early today, but mistakenly went to Ansel's SoHo bakery first, instead of Madison Square Park. When asked if she had taken off from work to come to the event, she replied: "I didn't, which is why you can't print my name."

Today's Cronut Hole giveaway was a one-time thing, but the Nutella Bar inside Eataly will be open for months (no Cronut Holes there though).
