Police have detained a suspect in the fatal beating of 68-year-old Ruan Wen Hui in the East Village last Friday. According to an NYPD spokesman, the 20-year-old male in custody was picked up earlier today and has not yet been charged with a crime. The spokesman declined to give the suspect's name, but says charges are pending. [UPDATE] Police have arrested Jamie Pugh and charged him with second degree murder and robbery.

Pugh, 20, lives in the Wald Houses above Houston Street and next to the FDR.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Pugh "has a criminal history that includes criminal trespassing, robbery and selling drugs, including cocaine and marijuana."

Graphic surveillance video shows Hui being approached by a man on East 6th Street near Avenue D at around 8:45 p.m. Friday night. The man throws Hui to the ground before punching and stomping on his head. Hui, who lived on Avenue C and had just walked his grandchildren home at the time of the attack, died of his injuries on Sunday night.

NY1 reports that Hui retired four years ago, and liked to play chess and exercise, in addition to walking his grandchildren home from school. "This stupid guy killed my dad. Also at the same time he killed all of my family's hearts," Hui's daughter told the outlet. "All of my family never sleep in these few days. We can't eat, we can't sleep."
