Soon you will no longer need to take a ferry to get your Blizzard fix—the first Manhattan Dairy Queen is opening on May 29th.

Word of the beloved chain arriving in Manhattan first came around Christmas last year, like a gift that promised to keep giving. Why is DQ so special? We asked Gothamist's managing editor John Del Signore, who explained DQ's significance while clicking through a rather painful slideshow documenting his younger years:

"I grew up in Pennsylvania, in a whorehouse. Closest I got to feeling wanted was from a girl who made me go through her john's pockets. If I collected more than a dollar, she bought me an Oreo Cookies Blizzard. And I would eat it alone in my room with great ceremony, feeling like a normal fat kid."

The DQ—which will feature a Big Apple Blizzard on the menu, as well as chicken salads, burgers, and other sweet and savory treats—will be open inside of a 2,500-square-foot space at 54 West 14th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues.

The company has been documenting their move in to the new space on Facebook.
