Di Fara has notoriety and Roberta's has the Clintons but it's the city's slice joints that win our hearts for sheer volume, convenience and no attitude pies—or lots of attitude, depending on where you end up. They're also the focus of The New York Pizza Project, a pet photography idea from five native New Yorkers that eclipsed its humble beginnings and is now destined for coffee tables citywide. Since beginning the project three years ago, the dudes have visited over 100 pizza shops across the five boroughs, interviewing owners, regulars and pie slingers on their journey. Their stipulations: no chains and no pie-only joints.
Instead of miles and miles of pizza porn, the creators (Corey, Gabe, Ian, Nick, and Tim) focused their attention on "the people, their stories, the places and the neighborhoods that surround them," illustrating the city's pizza-obsessed landscape. "We like to say 'it's not about the food, it's about everything else,'" explains co-founder Ian Manheimer. "We started to see the city through the lens of the stories we were capturing. Recurring themes about immigrants starting new, the complications of working with family, and small businesses trying to withstand gentrification were told to us over and over again. To us, these narratives became the authentic voice of the city, and we wanted to share them with everyone."
The team began a Kickstarter campaign on April 16th and reached their $15,000 in under 36 hours. The campaign stays open through May 16th, however, and the dudes are still looking for recommendations from their backers about which pizza places to document. Look for the first printing around the holidays later this year; could make a good gift for the natives in your life.
