A former NYPD officer has been arrested for allegedly fatally shooting his wife in front of their two small children in Queens today. Former officer Kevin Canty, 43, allegedly shot the 40-year-old woman, whose name hasn't been released yet, inside the couple’s home on 104th Street near 101st Avenue in Ozone Park just before 11 a.m. "They came in screaming, crying saying their dad just shot their mom and there’s blood all over, please help,” local Heidi Gamble told CBS, saying the kids ran out of the house and into a nearby bodega after the shooting.
"They said, 'My daddy just shot my mommy,’" a grocer at nearby Casablanca deli, the bodega the kids ran into, told the News. "The neighbor said, ‘I had to take them out of there—they can’t be seeing that.' Then police put them in an ambulance." Witnesses told cops that Canty ran several blocks to Pitkin Avenue, where they said he tried to steal a car. He was arrested about a mile from his house.
Canty was as Manhattan transit cop before retiring last year with a disability; he was previously praised by the NYPD on Facebook for his part in saving the life of a man who suffered a heart attack at the Union Square subway station in July 2012.
