The doughnut finder app might first seem like a silly throw-away, the sort of gimmick designed to garner a brief outburst of media hype before fading into app-oblivion. (See: Leftover Swap). But Doughbot is different, at least to a certain discerning segment of the population familiar with the sensation of needing a doughnut right now, but not content to settle for some low-rent grocery store pastry. Who are these people? The last Yelp search in my phone is "fancy donut." There must be others out there.
Doughbot scans Instagram, Yelp and Yahoo to connect users with the artisanal doughnut of their dreams, at the shortest distance. The app costs 99 cents, which is roughly the same price as the aforementioned crappy dough circle and about a third what you can expect to pay for the luxury variety.
There's also a promo video, which depicts a charming robot frolicking through, swimming in and making snow angels upon (but never actually eating) clumps and clumps of doughnuts. Its tagline is "There will be Doughnuts," presumably a "There Will Be Blood" reference, which forges troubling mental connections. Are Blood Doughnuts the new Blood Diamonds? Quick, look at the pictures.
