A marked NYPD cruiser struck a 69-year-old man this afternoon near the intersection of Broadway at West 78th Street.
An NYPD spokeswoman says that the police vehicle was traveling north on Broadway when it hit the pedestrian at around 1:34 p.m. An FDNY spokesman said that the man was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in serious condition.
The NYPD spokeswoman declined to say whether the police vehicle had its emergency lights on, or whether it was traveling with the light, but said that the victim is currently in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing, and Councilmember Helen Rosenthal tweeted that she was on the scene.
The Daily News is reporting that the victim is homeless, and that the police car had its sirens and lights on.
Three pedestrians have been killed on the Upper West Side this year, prompting criticism from neighborhood groups that the NYPD hasn't been properly enforcing speeding and traffic laws against driver as it cracked down on jaywalking.
