Two NYPD officers are in critical condition after sustaining injuries while responding to a fire at a Coney Island high rise this afternoon. According to a police spokeswoman, the two officers, a male and a female, arrived at 2007 Surf Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m. The officers boarded an elevator to reach the fire on the 13th floor, and were stuck between the 12th and 13th floors while the elevator filled with smoke. When the elevator reached the ground floor, both officers were found lying down and unconscious.
Both officers were taken to Lutheran Hospital. Their identities have not been released, but the Daily News reports that the 36-year-old female officer has four years on the job, while the 38-year-old male has eight years.
The Times reports that roughly 70 firefighters responded to the NYCHA building, and that the blaze was under control by 1:30 p.m. An FDNY training manual [PDF] recommends not using elevators if a fire exists on the 7th floor or lower.
