The city has issued 11,715 tickets to speeding drivers thanks to the speed cameras that were installed in public school zones earlier this year, according to the Department of Transportation. But only five out of the 20 cameras installed are in use, and during limited hours; despite efforts made by the de Blasio administration to get more cameras from the state, the new state budget has not allotted the city any additional ones.

The Post reports that the majority of the tickets—which run $50 each—were issued on Queens Boulevard between 58th and 53rd Streets in Woodside. "When we first moved in it seemed like maybe once a month we had an accident right here,” are resident Malcom Reynolds, 30, told the tabloid of the intersection at 58th and Queens Boulevard. “This intersection seems to be particularly bad, but recently there have been less accidents."

But critics have noted these tickets are not enough—the five cameras are only turned on one hour before the school day begins and one hour after school activities end, and according to Streetsblog, there is a huge drop in ticketing by the afternoon. The cameras are not turned on between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m, which DMV data shows is when more than 75 percent of the city's traffic fatalities happen.

De Blasio requested Albany install an additional 160 cameras; that request appears to have been denied.
