Earlier this year the "secret" dive bar called Bleecker Heights Tavern closed up shop in its location above Five Guys burgers in the West Village. The second floor space has now reopened as The Garret a decidedly more upscale cocktail den that channels more art house loft than dorm room disaster.
The eclectic decor includes multicolored skull paintings by street artist Bradley Theodore, as well as a "hand-painted printed taxidermy rhinoceros head" by artist Nick Bakita. If that all sounds a little macabre don't worry; two vaulted sky lights, glass chandeliers and plenty of views out onto the intersection won't let you be afraid of the dark.
The bar features 14 tap beers plus the de rigueur speciality cocktails if that's your thing. The herbaceous Rosarito Stick-Up ($14) whips up El Tesoro tequila and Grand Marnier with rosemary, thyme, sage syrup and egg white; on the flip side, their signature drink dubbed the Two Lime Crew ($10) is just a vodka soda with two limes. If you didn't fortify with a burger on your way up you'll be able to order special items that Five Guys created for the bar. As long as that includes their superlative french fries we're on board.
296 Bleecker Street, (212) 675-6157; garretnyc.com. Open daily at 3:30 p.m.
