It's a beautiful day today, don't you think? The sun's out, the snow has mostly melted and this morning's low of 21 and expected high of 31 are only a few degrees cooler than normal for the 24th of January. Clear skies will abound as high pressure builds over the northeast today and the radiational cooling tonight will drop tomorrow morning's temperature down to the mid 20s, which is only slightly below normal for late January.
As the high pressure system moves offshore on Tuesday, it will run into a bombing nor'easter. Look for cloudy skies in the morning turning to snowy skies in the afternoon. The departing high pressure system should keep the storm far enough away that the city will only get a couple inches of snow tomorrow night. Eastern Long Island, however, could see up to six inches of flakey goodness. All in all a typical mid-winter storm.
The quick-moving storm will be followed by gusty northwesterly breezes on Wednesday. Wind chills could dip as low as the teens as the winds gust up to 30-35 mph. Once the winds die down we're in for the January Thaw. Thursday is expected to warm to the mid 40s and it could be close to 60 degrees on Friday. That's crazy warm for late January! We could see some rain on Saturday but the unusually warm weather will continue with a high again near 60 on Saturday and the mid 50s on Sunday.
