Grungy Bleecker Street music venue Kenny's Castaways, which closed in 2012, has been replaced by a swanky new wine bar and gastropub by the owners of Osteria Cotta on the Upper West Side. The venue, called Carroll Place, offers American and Italian standards like meat and cheese boards and fancy pizzas plus $12 cocktails, a far cry from the PBR cans and rail whiskey shots ingested by the space's former clientele.
The new owners didn't gut the place completely, opting to reuse as much of the bar's old beams, tables and floorings as they could. That said, Kenny's regulars won't recognize the space at all. The 20-seat bar downstairs overlooks a custom wood stove where they'll fire up the pizzas and some other menu items; a communal woodblock table and a few high tops offer additional seating for eating or drinking.
Upstairs you'll find the "Living Room," which has been decked out with upholstered chairs, couches and banquettes, area rugs and even a chandelier. Mercifully, one no longer has to traverse the stage area to use the restroom. Steven Tyler wouldn't know what hit him.
Pizzas include the Tartufo ($12.50) with speck, truffle cream, button mushrooms, fresh mozzarella and truffle oil and the Salame ($13.50) with spicy salame, black olives, tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. They're doing things like the Burrata Burger ($16) with grilled tomato and prosciutto and a Jamon Serrano focaccia ($13.50) plus larger format entrees including Housemade Ravioli ($12.50) with tomato, eggplant, ricotta and parmigiano and Grilled Salmon ($18.50) with sauteed spinach and eggplant caponata. Twenty wines are offered by the glass ($8 - 13), half carafe or full carafe, plus beers "by barrel" ($7)—including Italian options Peroni and Moretti—bottle and can.
