The coolest City Council in America will solidify that title by honoring celebrated South Bronx DJ Afrika Bambaaataa and a handful of rap's most influential figures tomorrow afternoon. Councilman Fernando Cabrera, who is responsible for bringing together these figures, is also expected to make an announcement regarding the placement of the Hip-Hop Museum at the Kingsbridge Armory.
Artists attending the event and being honored with ceremonial proclamations include: Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Joe Conzo, Grand Wizard Theodore, Cutman LG, Rocky Bucano, Grandmaster Caz and Jorge Fabel Pabon. There will also be a special posthumous proclamation given to Pete DJ Jones, who passed away this January.
We'll have more tomorrow on the honorees, but here's a taste for now: released in 1980, Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" is often cited as one of the first breakthrough hip-hop records, peaking at #87 on the Billboard charts.
