Police are searching for a suspect accused of walking up to a man and punching him in the face on the Lower East Side early this morning, sending the victim to the hospital with a broken jaw.
The attack, which fits the profile of the so-called "knockout game" attacks, occurred around 2:25 a.m. on the Bowery between Stanton and Rivington streets, according to the NYPD. The 23-year-old victim was reportedly struck in the face with the suspect's closed fist before he lost consciousness, awaking only after he'd been taken to Bellevue Hospital with a broken jaw. A surveillance video shows the brutal assault taking place:
This is the second instance of an assault that fits the pattern of the knockout game—which is to say, a random beating in which nothing is stolen—to be reported this week. Another attack took place on Sunday afternoon, in which a handful of teenagers accosted a 36-year-old woman as she was walking her dog near her Gold Street apartment in DUMBO. Police have since released video surveillance of that incident, as well.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website, or by texting CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577.
