A 73-year-old woman was killed by a driver in Queens this morning after she fell in the middle of Jamaica Avenue. According to a statement from the NYPD, 27-year-old Bladimer Alvarez Sorto struck Kaneez Hussein at Jamaica and 131st Street with his 2007 Nissan Altima as he was driving east at around 6:30 a.m. Police say Sorto fled the scene, but was later apprehended. Hussein's death is the city's 20th pedestrian fatality this year.
Hussein, who lived approximately two blocks from where she was struck, was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital. Sorto is charged with leaving the scene of a collision, a felony, and driving without a valid license.
On Tuesday, Mayor de Blasio pressed for tougher penalties on driving without a license, noting that 75% of those with suspended or invalid licenses still get behind the wheel. "There's going to be more consequences for bad behavior that could endanger human life," the mayor said.
