That was a good snowfall yesterday! Storm totals across the city ranged from 7.1 inches of snow at JFK to 13 inches in South Ozone Park. Central Park measured 11.5 inches (minus what the snow machines produced). It is interesting to note that the National Weather Service was way out ahead of any other forecast we noticed in predicting the range of snowfall. That seems to be because they understood that this storm would have a much higher than normal snow-to-water ratio.

The general rule is that ten inches of snow will melt down to an inch of water. With the Arctic air arriving much earlier than the moisture, the NWS knew that ratio would be closer to 15 or 20 to 1. Even that turned out to be an underestimate as the actual ratio was over 20 to 1 in most locations.

Now that the storm has left we've got some bitterly cold weather to contend with. While the sun is shining strong we'll be lucky to get up to 15 degrees this afternoon. A brisk wind out of the northwest will keep the wind chill below zero from now until Friday morning. A dying Alberta Clipper may kick off a few flurries tomorrow afternoon but no accumulation is expected.

What that clipper will do is send in a reinforcing shot of cold air. We might reach the low 20s tomorrow but it is back to the teens on Friday. Another clipper is expected on Saturday and yet another on Monday. Both will bring at least a chance of snow and a rollercoastering of temperatures into early next week.
