The ferry that provides cheap service between the Rockaways, Brooklyn Armory Terminal, and Pier 11 in Manhattan is being extended until May, with an option to run until August as the city's Economic Development Corporation mulls whether or not to make the route permanent.
Instituted immediately after Hurricane Sandy to serve the residents of the Rockaways, the ferry's one-way weekday price will rise from $2.00 to $3.50. Round-trip weekend fares are $30.
On an average weekday, 350 people use the ferry, which takes around 35 minutes to reach Manhattan from Queens and saves riders an hour in commuting time. The service was supposed to expire on January 31st, but its popularity—and the persistent urging of area residents and politicians—has kept it alive—more than 200,000 passengers have ridden it since November of 2012. This is the ferry's fourth extension.
“I applaud the decision of Mayor de Blasio to extend ferry service in the Rockaways," Queens Borough President Melinda Katz says in a release. "I also look forward to the upcoming RFP process and moving forward with making this essential service permanent."
Next month the NYEDC will issue a Request for Proposals for making the service permanent. "Response to the RFP will be evaluated in tandem with ridership levels during the extension to determine if service will be additionally renewed through August 1, 2014," the release states.
You can find the ferry's schedule here.
