Investigators say they have found the Dodge Caravan believed to have been used in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Williamsburg landlord Menachem Stark.
Video surveillance from Stark's January 2nd disappearance showed the Brooklyn businessman getting pulled into the light-colored 2002 Dodge Caravan; police officers say that very van was discovered in Brownsville early yesterday morning. The car's owner was reportedly questioned but not arrested, and investigators are scouring the vehicle for further evidence. Law enforcement agents told the Post that the car had not been stolen.
Cops believe Stark's abduction may have been a scare tactic by a business associate to whom the landlord owed a debt; they recently investigated Stark's connection to the Broadway Bank of Chicago, which loaned Stark and business partner Israel Perlmutter nearly $8 million, even though the duo's credit was questionable.
Investigators say the recovered Dodge seems to have been washed and cleaned recently; prior to discovering the van, authorities had been looking into a cell phone found under Stark's own car, and they believe the phone belongs to a suspect in the case. "First of all, we are going to get to the bottom of it," Mayor de Blasio told an Orthodox radio program last week. "We will find who did this to him and who robbed children of a father and a wife of a husband.”
