A Brooklyn landlord and father of three from Bangladesh was found brutally murdered in the basement office of an apartment building he owned on McDonald Avenue in Kensington shortly after midnight this morning. Police say Mahuddin Mahmud, 57, was discovered with "deep lacerations to his throat" in the basement of 546 McDonald Avenue. The NYPD had been called to check on a report of an assault in progress, but when they arrived, they found only Mahmud's corpse.

Police sources tell NBC New York that Mahmud's head was "nearly" cut off, and his face was burned. A tenant who lives in the basement is reportedly a person of interest and has not been seen since the investigation began. Mahmud lived a mile away on Westminster Road, and operated an electronics store in the McDonald Avenue building. According to NBC New York:

Family and friends say the Bangladeshi immigrant came to the U.S. decades ago and worked hard to build his computer software business. A childhood friend told NBC 4 New York that Mahmud believed so much in the American dream that his wedding portrait hangs next to an American flag.

Mahmud is survived by his wife and three children, ages 20, 9 and 4. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
